About Sam

I'm Sam Nicholson, co-founder of Clearly Built, and if there's one thing I'd like people to know about me, it's that I genuinely care about the people I work with.

I've always been a people person. I enjoy meeting new people, hearing their stories and building honest, meaningful relationships. It's something that's shaped my entire working life, from starting out in customer service after leaving school, through a career in sales and marketing, and eventually into the construction industry.

I first experienced construction while working weekends alongside college, before returning to the industry in my late twenties.

Those different experiences taught me something important: no matter how good a product or service might be, the way people are treated matters just as much.

I've always believed that the best way to do business is to be honest, listen properly, offer something genuinely valuable and deliver the best customer experience possible.

And that's a belief I've carried into Clearly Built.

Why Clearly Built matters to me

Over my years in construction, I began noticing something that increasingly bothered me.

There are some exceptionally talented tradespeople in this industry, people who work incredibly hard and take genuine pride in what they do. But unfortunately, the level of communication, transparency and customer service doesn't always match the quality of the work.

I've seen corners being cut, customers left confused and people feeling intimidated by an industry they simply don't understand.

For someone investing their savings into their home, not knowing whether something is being done correctly, whether a quotation is fair or whether they're being given the right advice can be frightening.

And when things go wrong, homeowners can feel completely stuck.

What frustrated me was that many of these situations could be improved with better communication, honest guidance and somebody experienced taking the time to explain things properly.

But there's another side to this story.

Honest, hardworking tradespeople can find themselves fighting against the reputation created by poor practices elsewhere in the industry. They can be undercut by those willing to cut corners, or find themselves having to overcome a customer's distrust before they've even started.

I don't believe that's fair either.

Good homeowners deserve protection, and good tradespeople deserve recognition.

Guidance built around people

I wanted to help create something that could make a genuine difference to both.

A business where homeowners could turn for straightforward, independent guidance, without feeling embarrassed about what they don't know.

Somewhere people could ask questions, understand their options and feel more confident about the decisions they're making.

I feel particularly strongly about protecting vulnerable people, including older homeowners and women who may have experienced intimidating or dishonest practices.

Nobody should feel pressured, frightened or taken advantage of when trying to improve or maintain their own home.

At the same time, I want Clearly Built to support the honest tradespeople who are working hard to deliver quality services and build a good reputation.

With construction costs continuing to put pressure on both customers and businesses, I believe that transparency, trust and accountability are more important than ever.

Clearly Built is our way of helping bring those values to the forefront.

A friendship behind the business

One of the things that makes Clearly Built particularly special to me is that I've founded it alongside my childhood friend, Sam Winder.

We've known each other for most of our lives, and throughout that time we've always shared an interest in business, supported each other's ambitions and encouraged one another's ideas.

We've also followed our own paths, experienced the highs and lows of business and developed very different, but complementary, strengths.

I'm naturally people-focused. I love communicating, building relationships and making sure people feel listened to and valued.

Sam is more technically minded, methodical and systems-driven.

Where I naturally focus on the people and their experience, Sam brings structure, technical thinking and a detailed approach to solving problems.

After years of pursuing our own ventures and learning from the challenges along the way, we reached a point where bringing our experience together just made sense.

The timing felt right, the opportunity felt right, and most importantly, we shared the same vision for what Clearly Built could become.

It's a business built on more than our professional experience. It's built on a lifelong friendship, mutual respect and a genuine belief in what we're trying to achieve.

What you can expect from me

If you contact Clearly Built, I want you to feel three things from the very beginning.

Trust. Commitment. And that you're speaking to someone who genuinely cares.

I don't want people to feel like another enquiry, another quotation or another number.

I want to understand what you're trying to achieve, what concerns you might have and how we can genuinely help.

Sometimes that might mean guiding you through a complex project. Sometimes it might mean helping you understand a quotation, introducing you to a suitable trade or simply taking the time to answer a question that's been worrying you.

Whatever the situation, my approach remains the same: listen, be honest and do everything reasonably possible to help you make the right decisions.

Because to me, good customer service isn't an extra. It's how business should be done.
